System requirements
macCurrent is a universal app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 15 or later.
Before digging into a problem, open Help > Diagnostics Health. This local checklist confirms required tools, optional permissions, notification status, background scan setup, and hosted catalog connectivity, and often explains why an update action is unavailable.
Troubleshooting common issues
An app shows Update Available but reports it is current
macCurrent compares the installed version against the latest version it can verify from the App Store, Homebrew, Microsoft AutoUpdate, Sparkle, or the direct download catalog. If you updated the app outside macCurrent, run Check for Updates (Command-R); apps clear from the update list once the installed version is current. If the update genuinely does not exist, use Report False Positive on the app row so the catalog entry can be reviewed.
An update is marked Manual
Manual means macCurrent can inventory the app but has no trusted automatic update path for it. Instead of guessing at an installer, macCurrent hands off: use the app homepage button or open the app itself to get the update from the developer. The review-before-install checks described in how to update Mac apps safely only apply when source, signing, and updater evidence check out.
An update says Requires Administrator
Requires Administrator means macOS blocked the app replacement. Grant App Management to macCurrent in System Settings before using automatic installs or backup restores. Scanning and downloading still work without it, but macOS may block app bundle replacement until it is enabled.
A vendor updater opened instead of a normal install
Some app families are safest to update with the vendor's own updater. macCurrent hands supported Microsoft, Google, Adobe, Docker Desktop, Mozilla, and Homebrew updates to their own update tools when those tools are installed, and App Store apps always update through the Mac App Store.
Install and update issues
If an update fails, include the update source, the downloaded file name, and the error text shown in macCurrent.
Failed update cards let you copy the full error or submit diagnostics directly. Help > Recent Activity keeps a local log of update checks, downloads, installs, and failures that you can copy or save.
Backup and restore issues
If a backup or restore does not behave as expected, include the app name, installed path, version being restored, and whether the action was started from the context menu or during an update.
Restore Latest Backup replaces the selected app's .app bundle only; it does not roll back settings, containers, Keychain items, caches, or other support files. How macCurrent backs up apps before updating explains when automatic backups run and where they are stored.
Beta expiration
The current beta period runs through July 31, 2026. If the app says the beta expired, install the latest macCurrent beta.
You can also use macCurrent > Check for Updates from the menu bar; self-updates run through Sparkle on the signed beta channel and will not install a build the updater cannot verify.
Where per-app history lives
Open any app row to see its details pane: the update judgement, source, installed and latest versions, signing information, update channel, release notes, recent activity, backups, and history. It is the first place to look when an update misbehaves.
For a Mac-wide view, File > Export Inventory saves the full inventory as a CSV, and File > Copy Inventory Summary copies a concise summary with last scan time, status counts, and source counts.
Frequently asked questions
Do Apple silicon and Intel Macs use the same download?
Yes. macCurrent is distributed as one universal app that runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 15 or later. macCurrent also requests architecture-compatible update metadata and rejects an incompatible replacement app before installation.
How do I report a bug from inside macCurrent?
Use Help > Submit an Issue, Report This App, Report False Positive, or the actions on a failed update card. Reports accept a description, optional screenshots, and sanitized diagnostics. Track earlier reports under Help > Issue Submissions.
Does submitting an issue send personal data?
Diagnostics are sanitized and optional, screenshots are stored privately for review, and issue status checks send only the report ID and a local receipt token stored on this Mac. See the security page for the full trust model.
Why is an update I snoozed or ignored missing from Available Updates?
Snoozed and ignored updates are removed from Available Updates and notifications but stay in the full inventory. Resume them under Settings > Ignored Apps and Ignored Updates. If the available version changes, a snoozed update returns automatically.
